Why mazes are good practice

Following a path with a pencil asks a child to look ahead, plan a route, keep the pencil moving smoothly and stay between the walls. All of that is useful before and during early writing. Mazes also build persistence, because dead ends are part of the fun and finding another way is a skill in itself.

Three levels

  • Easy has a small grid and wide paths, five squares across and six down on a single-maze page. Wide paths are forgiving for children who are still learning to control a crayon.
  • Medium uses eight squares across and nine down, with narrower paths and more dead ends.
  • Hard uses twelve squares across and fourteen down, with small paths for older children who enjoy a challenge.

Those sizes are for one maze per page. When you print two or more, each maze is wider and shorter so that two fit on a page, and the paths are a little smaller.

How every maze is made

The generator carves a brand-new maze every time you press the button. Each maze has exactly one route from the start to the finish, so there are no loops to get stuck in, and the solution page always shows the single right path. The start is in a top corner and the finish in the opposite bottom corner, and some mazes are mirrored so they do not all look the same.

Pictures at the start and finish

Pairs such as bee and flower, cat and fish, caterpillar and leaf, or rocket and star turn a maze into a tiny story: “Help the bee get to the flower.” That gives a child a reason to keep going. If you prefer a plainer page, switch off “Pictures at start and finish” and the maze shows the words START and FINISH instead.

How to use the generator

  1. Choose a level. Easy is a good place to begin.
  2. Choose how many mazes you want. One gives a big maze, and two or more share a page.
  3. Press Generate new worksheet, then print it or save a PDF.
  4. Turn on “Include answer key page” to get the solutions. The route is drawn in green.

Helping children with mazes

  • Trace with a finger first. Then switch to a thick crayon for younger children and a pencil for older ones.
  • Look before you draw. Ask, “Which way do you think the bee should go?” Planning ahead is part of the skill.
  • Treat dead ends as information. Going back to the last fork is not a mistake. It is how mazes are solved.
  • For a tricky maze, try working backwards from the finish. The route from the end is often easier to spot.
  • Keep it relaxed. A wobbly line that stays on the path is a success.

Drawing a circle when shown how appears among the CDC’s milestones for age three, and holding a pencil between the fingers and thumb among those for age four (age 3, age 4). Children reach them at different times, so use these pages for practice and fun. If you have worries about your child’s development, talk to their teacher or doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Which level should I choose?

Start with Easy for children of about three to five, who are still learning pencil control. Try Medium once Easy feels simple, and keep Hard for older children who like a challenge.

Is there only one way through each maze?

Yes. Every maze has exactly one route from the start to the finish, with no loops, and the answer page shows it.

Why do some mazes start on the right?

Some mazes are mirrored so they do not all look the same. The start is always in a top corner and the finish in the opposite bottom corner, and arrows show where to enter and leave.

How many mazes fit on a page?

Choose 1 for one large maze on a page. Choosing 2 or more puts two mazes on each page, with each one wider and shorter.

Is there a solution page?

Yes. Turn on “Include answer key page” or press “Show answer key”. The correct route is drawn in green.
