Free addition worksheets for every level
Addition is the first big step in math after counting. A child learns that putting two groups together makes a bigger group, and later learns to do it in their head. This generator makes printable addition worksheets in seconds. Choose how high the numbers go, pick a layout, and press Print or Save as PDF. Every page can come with an answer key.
What to practice at each level
Many U.S. schools follow standards that build addition up in small steps. The table below is a guide only, so always follow your child’s own pace and your teacher’s plan.
| Level | Numbers | Good worksheet type |
|---|---|---|
| Preschool and early kindergarten | Within 5 | With pictures |
| Kindergarten | Within 10 | With pictures, then horizontal |
| 1st grade | Within 20 | Horizontal, missing number |
| 2nd grade | Within 100 | Vertical, with or without carrying |
Choose a worksheet type
- Vertical (stacked): the numbers are written one under the other, the way children add in school. It is the best layout for two-digit addition.
- Horizontal: problems such as 6 + 3 = ___, written side by side. It is good for learning addition facts.
- Missing number: problems such as 4 + ___ = 9. Your child works backward, which builds a deeper understanding of how numbers fit together.
- With pictures: two groups of pictures are shown, and your child counts them and adds. Pictures are ideal for preschool and kindergarten.
How to use the generator
- Choose Addition as the operation, or Mixed for addition and subtraction on one page.
- Choose a worksheet type and how high the numbers go.
- For numbers within 100, decide whether to allow carrying (also called regrouping).
- Choose how many problems you want and check the preview.
- Press Print or Save as PDF. Turn on the answer key page if you need one.
Tips for learning addition
- Start with objects. Add with blocks, snacks or toys before moving to paper.
- Count on. To add 3 + 5, start at 5 and count up three more: 6, 7, 8.
- Learn the doubles. Facts such as 4 + 4 and 6 + 6 are easy to remember and help with the facts next to them.
- Make a ten. To add 9 + 6, think 9 + 1 + 5. Making a ten is a strong strategy for sums within 20.
- Keep it short. Ten minutes a day works better than one long session, and fingers are allowed.
Not sure how many things there are in a group? Practice with our counting worksheets first, and use number tracing to learn to write the numbers. When addition feels easy, move on to subtraction worksheets.
Frequently asked questions
What are addition worksheets?
Addition worksheets are printable pages with addition problems for children to solve. They help children learn their addition facts, from simple sums such as 2 + 3 to two-digit problems such as 47 + 25.
What addition should a kindergartener know?
Many U.S. kindergarten programs teach adding within 10, often with pictures and objects, and ask children to know sums within 5 quickly. Standards vary by school and state, so check with your child's teacher.
What addition do first and second graders learn?
First graders usually add within 20, including making a ten. Second graders usually add within 100 and learn to carry, which is also called regrouping.
How do I make an addition worksheet?
Choose Addition, pick a worksheet type and how high the numbers go, and press Print or Save as PDF. Press Generate new worksheet for a fresh set of problems every time.
Can I make addition worksheets with pictures?
Yes. Choose With pictures to get two groups of animals, fruits, vehicles, toys or objects to count and add. You can also outline the pictures so children can color them.
What is regrouping in addition?
Regrouping, also called carrying, is needed when the ones add up to 10 or more, such as 27 + 15. You carry a ten to the tens column. For easier practice, choose No carrying or borrowing.
Do the worksheets come with an answer key?
Yes. Turn on Include answer key page and the answers are added as a separate page after the worksheet, so children do not see them.
Are the addition worksheets free?
Yes. You can make, print and save as many worksheets as you like, with no sign-up. Each sheet prints on US Letter or A4 paper.
Can I download ready-made addition worksheets as PDF files?
Yes. Below the generator there are free PDF files you can download and print right away: addition within 10, within 20, two-digit addition, addition with pictures, word problems and a printable addition chart. Each one comes in US Letter and A4.
