Who this workbook is for
Adding and taking away are the first big steps in math after counting. This workbook is for ages 5 to 7, usually kindergarten and first grade in the United States, for children who can count objects up to 10 and are ready to learn what plus and minus mean. It starts with pictures, because a child can see and count what is being added or taken away, and only later asks for number-only problems.
If your child is still learning to count, begin with the Counting Activity Book, and for writing the digits use the Number Tracing and Counting Book. To make extra pages with your own settings, use our addition worksheets and subtraction worksheets.

Add with Pictures (pages 4–8)
Each page has four problems. Your child counts two groups of pictures, such as 3 apples and 2 frogs, and writes how many there are in all. The first two pages stay within 5, and the next three go up to 10.
More Ways to Add (pages 9–14)
Ten frames show the counters in two colors, and a number line shows the hops from the starting number. Then come number sentences, a Make 10 page (7 + ___ = 10) and a page of doubles.
Take Away with Pictures (pages 15–19)
A group of pictures is shown with some crossed out. Your child counts what is left and writes the answer. This shows the idea of subtraction before any number-only sums, and it matches the way the adding pages work.
More Ways to Subtract (pages 20–23)
Ten frames with crossed-out counters, a number line with hops to the left, and subtraction number sentences within 10.
Mix It Up (pages 24–31)
Pages where your child must look at the sign and add or subtract, find a missing number, fill in the four facts of a fact family, and solve story problems such as “There are 6 cats in the yard. 5 cats go away. How many cats are left?”
Numbers to 20 (pages 32–35)
Stacked problems and number sentences with sums and differences up to 20, for children who are ready for the next step.

How to use this workbook
Print and start small
Choose US Letter or A4 and print at 100% (Actual size). Print only the first few pages and use a sharp pencil.
Count out loud
Ask your child to touch each picture and count it out loud, then write the answer in the dotted box.
Use real things
Blocks, coins, crayons or snacks make adding and taking away easy to see. Fingers are fine too.
One page a day
Keep sessions short, about ten minutes, and stop while it is still fun. Color a box on the tracker when a skill is easy.
Check together
Use the answer key at the back, then talk about any mistakes. Ask your child to explain how they found the answer.
Why pictures come first
Young children understand adding and subtracting best when they can see the objects. A group of three apples and a group of two frogs show that adding means putting groups together. A group of seven pears with two crossed out shows that taking away means fewer are left. When the idea is clear, ten frames and number lines help children see the numbers in a more organized way, and the number-only pages feel like a natural next step.
