Choose this book for picture-based alphabet activities

This is an activity book, not a handwriting drill. Children meet the letters through pictures, matching games, puzzles and coloring, with some tracing along the way. Use it when you want alphabet practice that feels like play, and add a tracing book when your child is ready to focus on writing neat letters.

Who this book is for

The book is made for ages 3 to 5, which covers preschool and pre-K. Ages are a guide, not a deadline, and every child moves at their own speed.

At 3 and 4, focus on looking, naming pictures, coloring and trying. Neat writing is not the goal yet. At 5, many children are ready to do more on their own, such as saying a letter’s sound and finishing a page with little help.

If your child is still scribbling and is not yet comfortable holding a pencil, start with our pre-writing worksheets and come back to the book later.

What is inside the alphabet activity book

The pages are colorful and full of pictures, not plain rows of letters and empty boxes. Children see each letter together with pictures they can name, point to and talk about, which makes it easier to connect a letter with its sound. All the artwork was drawn for this book.

Inside the book you will find:

  • Alphabet pages: A to Z, capital letters, small letters, and capital and small letters side by side, plus pages to write the alphabet from A to Z and from Z to A
  • Full activity sets for the letters A, B and C: meet the letter, trace, find and color, color and trace, circle the pictures, match, missing letter, before and after, a maze and a fun page
  • Tracing pages for the letters D to Z, three letters per page, with a picture for each letter
  • Beginning sound pages that ask your child to match each picture to its first letter
  • Letter puzzles: find the different letter, fill in missing letters, follow the alphabet path, and choose the next or the previous letter
  • Join-the-dots pages: connect the letters in order to draw a heart from A to Z and a star from Z to A
  • Review pages that match capital letters to small letters
  • Color by letter, patterns, vowels and consonants, a letter hunt, make-a-word pages and an alphabet coloring page
  • A progress page and a certificate of completion

Why pictures help children learn the alphabet

A letter on its own is just a shape. When a picture sits beside it, say an apple next to the letter A, the child has something to say out loud, remember and point to. Naming the picture also helps children hear the first sound of the word, which is where letter sounds begin. That is why the pages in this book are rich in pictures instead of plain.

How to use this alphabet activity book at home or in class

Print a few pages at a time

Choose US Letter or A4 above and print a small stack instead of all 70 pages. A small stack feels easy; a thick pile does not. Type a page range in the print window to print only what you need.

Say the letter and name the pictures

Say the letter name and its sound, then name the pictures together before your child starts.

Follow your child’s interest

The letters in their own name or a favorite animal are a good place to start. There is no need to go in order.

Keep sessions short

About 10 to 15 minutes is plenty. Stop while your child is still enjoying it, and offer crayons, markers, dot markers or stickers. Chunky crayons are easiest for 3-year-olds.

Use it in class or at home

In a classroom, use the pages as a center activity, an early-finisher task or a take-home pack. At home, keep finished pages in a folder, or staple and punch them to make a book your child made themselves.

Printing tips: A4 or US Letter?

  • US Letter (8.5 × 11 inches) is the standard paper size in the USA and Canada. A4 (210 × 297 mm) is used in most other countries, including the UK, India, Pakistan, Australia and Europe.
  • Choose the PDF that matches your paper. Print at 100% or Actual size, not Fit to page, so nothing gets cut off.
  • The colorful pages use more ink. Draft mode saves ink if you are printing many pages.
  • Use slightly thicker paper if your child will use markers, so the color does not show through.
  • Staple or hole-punch the pages to make a book.
